The square root grading curve is a popular method used by educators to adjust test scores when an exam proves more difficult than intended. Unlike linear curves that add the same number of points to everyone, the square root curve provides proportionally more help to students who scored lower while still rewarding higher performers.

This curve is particularly effective because it maintains the relative ranking of students while boosting overall class performance. A student who scored 49% gets curved to 70%, while someone who scored 81% reaches 90% – both improve, but the struggling student gets more assistance.
