Learning Tips for Parents and Teachers

💡 Sound It Out

Encourage children to sound out each letter in the number word. For example, with "three," practice saying "/th/-/r/-/ee/" and then blend the sounds together.

✏️ Trace and Write

Have children trace the number words with their finger first, then practice writing them. Focus on one or two number words at a time to avoid overwhelming young learners.

🔄 Connect Numbers to Words

Show the numeral (like "5") alongside its word form ("five") to help children make the connection between the two representations.

🎵 Sing Number Songs

Use songs and rhymes that incorporate number words to make learning more fun and memorable. The rhythm and repetition help reinforce the spelling and pronunciation.

Fun Activities to Practice Number Words

🎮 Number Word Matching Game

Create a simple matching game using index cards. On some cards, write the numerals (1, 2, 3...) and on others, write the number words (one, two, three...). Place them face down and have children find the matching pairs.

  1. Create 20 cards (10 numbers, 10 words)
  2. Arrange cards face down in rows
  3. Take turns flipping two cards
  4. If the cards match (e.g., "5" and "five"), keep them
  5. The player with the most pairs wins

📚 Number Word Hunt

Hide cards with number words around the room. Call out a number and have children find the corresponding word card. When they find it, ask them to say the word and identify the letters and sounds.

🎨 Number Word Art

Have children create art projects that incorporate number words. For example, they could draw "three" trees or "five" flowers, then label their drawing with both the numeral and the word.

👐 Clap and Spell

Say a number word and have children clap once for each letter as they spell it out loud. This helps reinforce the spelling while making it interactive and engaging.
