What Are Percentages?

Converting Between Forms

Fraction to Percentage

To convert a fraction to a percentage:

  1. Convert the fraction to an equivalent fraction with denominator 100 (if possible)
  2. The numerator becomes the percentage

Example: Convert 3/5 to a percentage

Step 1: Convert to an equivalent fraction with denominator 100.
3/5 = (3 × 20)/(5 × 20) = 60/100

Step 2: The numerator becomes the percentage.
60/100 = 60%

Alternative method for fraction to percentage:

  1. Divide the numerator by the denominator to get a decimal
  2. Multiply by 100 and add the % symbol

Example: Convert 3/5 to a percentage

Step 1: Divide 3 by 5.
3 ÷ 5 = 0.6

Step 2: Multiply by 100 and add %.

Decimal to Percentage

To convert a decimal to a percentage:

  1. Multiply the decimal by 100
  2. Add the % symbol

Example: Convert 0.75 to a percentage

Step 1: Multiply by 100.
0.75 × 100 = 75

Percentage to Decimal

To convert a percentage to a decimal:

  1. Remove the % symbol
  2. Divide by 100

Step 2: Divide by 100.
35 ÷ 100 = 0.35

Percentage to Fraction

To convert a percentage to a fraction:

  1. Remove the % symbol and write as a fraction over 100
  2. Simplify the fraction if possible

Example: Convert 40% to a fraction

Step 1: Write as a fraction over 100.
40% = 40/100

Step 2: Simplify the fraction.
40/100 = 4/10 = 2/5
