Place Value to Millions
What is Place Value?
Place value helps us understand that the position of a digit in a number determines its value. In our number system, each place has a value that is 10 times greater than the place to its right. This is why we call it the base-10 system or decimal system.
By the end of Grade 4, you should understand numbers up to millions. Let's explore how place value works for these larger numbers!
Place Value Chart
Here's a place value chart showing the positions from ones to millions:
The number shown above is 1,234,567, which we read as "one million, two hundred thirty-four thousand, five hundred sixty-seven".
Understanding the Value of Each Digit
In our number system, the value of a digit depends on its position. Let's break down the number 1,234,567:
1 in the millions place = 1,000,000
2 in the hundred thousands place = 200,000
3 in the ten thousands place = 30,000
4 in the thousands place = 4,000
5 in the hundreds place = 500
6 in the tens place = 60
7 in the ones place = 7
When we add all these values together: 1,000,000 + 200,000 + 30,000 + 4,000 + 500 + 60 + 7 = 1,234,567
Why Place Value Matters
Understanding place value helps us:
- Read and write numbers correctly
- Compare numbers (which is larger or smaller)
- Round numbers to different place values
- Perform operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
Try This!
Look at the number 5,280,436. What is the value of:
- The digit 5? (5 × 1,000,000 = 5,000,000)
- The digit 8? (8 × 10,000 = 80,000)
- The digit 4? (4 × 100 = 400)
Comparing Large Numbers
When comparing numbers, we look at the digits from left to right (highest place value first):
Compare 2,345,678 and 2,345,612
Both numbers have the same digits until we reach the tens place.
2,345,678 has 7 in the tens place.
2,345,612 has 1 in the tens place.
Since 7 > 1, we know that 2,345,678 > 2,345,612.
Big Numbers in Real Life
Understanding large numbers helps us make sense of information in our world:
- Population of a city or country (millions)
- Distance to the moon (384,400 kilometers)
- Money in a city's budget (millions of dollars)
- Number of stars in our galaxy (billions)
Next time you see a large number, try breaking it down by place value. This will help you better understand and work with numbers of all sizes!
Challenge Yourself!
Write these numbers in standard form:
- 3 millions + 5 ten thousands + 8 hundreds + 2 ones
- 7 hundred thousands + 6 thousands + 9 tens
- 4 millions + 2 thousands + 7 ones
